About
Allegra Taylor
My unconventional globetrotting childhood gave me a love of travel and an appreciation of diverse cultures.
I am the eldest child of a Polish Jewish father and an Irish/English mother, born in Australia. I went to school in America and Brazil. At seventeen I married documentary filmmaker Richard Taylor. Together we brought up six children, two of whom we adopted while living in Nigeria and one in Kenya. While the children were young I took an honours degree in Music and Education and ran my own music school.
I have always had a special interest in rites and ceremonies, themes concerning spirituality, indigenous health practices and complementary medicine. So as the children got older I began to travel widely in the developing world to research and write my books. Many of the themes centered on women’s issues reclaiming some of the archetypes so long suppressed: The Healer; The Whore; The Priestess; The Crone.
I have been a popular speaker and workshop leader. I have guested on several television programmes and taught courses in creative writing, healing and meditation in England and in many parts of the world. I have been a regular director and facilitator at Skyros, the holistic centre in Greece, Tobago and Thailand, at Cortijo Romero in Spain, Huzur Vadisi in Turkey, The Forum at Claremont in California and Ulpotha in Sri Lanka.
For ten years I worked as an Independent Celebrant trained by Green Fuse to conduct beautiful funerals with a personal touch. I also devised and directed wonderful bespoke weddings, civil ceremonies, adoptions, house blessings and baby namings.
I have thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
